The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente10/26/2013 ![]() I kid you not, that really is the title of this book. I left the image big so you could see it for yourself! And, yes, I chose to read this book because of the awesome long title and the word "circumnavigated"--isn't that a great word? It means to travel around a place. In The Girl Who Cicumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente (Lexile: 870 L; Reading Level: Grades 5-9), the main character, September, travels to Fairyland with the help of the Green Wind, meets some witches who can brew the future, a Wyveryn named A-Through-L, whose father was a library, girl made of soap who watches the baths, a Marid who can grant wishes, but only if he is defeated in a wrestling match, and the Marquess, a ruler who has made Fairyland a much less-fun place than it could be. September's adventures take her through several areas of Fairyland as she goes on several quests, both for herself and others. The interesting words and phrasing of this book were as big a part of why I enjoyed it as the adventures and story itself! Anyone who loves adventure and wordplay will enjoy this book, I am sure! (
